The aim here is to make explicit the surprisingly patterned manner in which participants enter and leave the story, and to point out some of the syntacttic devices by which focus is switched.
Participial clauses account for a remarkably high propotion of episode-initial material. Matthew uses such participial links much more than Mark or Luke.
In these scenes the participation of certain characters will be discussed.
