An analytical study on behavioral responses of different fishes, related to excretory ammonia concentration

SUMMARY

The present experiment was conducted to analyze the compatibility in tolerance of ammonia secretion in various fishes; C. gariepinus, C. batrachus, H. fossilis, C. punctatus and C. carpio using 160-liter capacity culture tank. Two different systems; mono culture and poly culture were arranged to compare their behavioral activities including opercular movement (OM), S-shaped movement (SM), surfacing activity (SA), jumping activity (JA), bottom dwelling activity (BDA), schooling behavior (SB), erraching behavior (EB), equilibrium status (Eq B) and growth performance of fishes for 158 days. Certain daily changes were observed during the experiment and after 136 days (concentration of ammonia, 1.6mg/L) all species C. carpio, C. punctatus, C. batrachus, H. fossilis died subsequently. After 158 days post exposure of 1.97mg/L ammonia to the fishes, all the studied fish were found dead in poly culture experimentation system except Clarias garipenus. The study also indicates that the behavioral responses of the selected species are directly related to the excretory ammonia concentration.

ABSTRACT Aimed at proposing a strategy for the prevention of alcoholism in twins an epidemiological, analytical and cross-sectional research was carried out during February - March 2007 in Pinar del Rio province. The universe was taken from the National Records of twins, studying clinical, epidemiological and genealogical behavior of alcohol consumption in twins. To collect the information a survey and a genealogical tree for each family were made. Also calculating twin's concordance for the par, case rate and inheritance; data were presented in tables and graphics; prevailing alcoholic patients older than 40 years old and male sex. Familial history of alcoholism resulted statistically significant in the group of first degree relatives. The concordance was greater in monozygotic than in dizygotic twins and genetic contribution for the alcoholism reached 66%. A strategy based on the principles of genetic advice to prevent alcoholism was created. Key words: Alcoholism, Twins/geneticS.

ABSTRACT An intervention-action, analytical and cohort research was conducted at "Abel Santamaria Cuadrado" University Hospital-2007, aimed at showing the effectiveness of maternal volumetric expansion in the increase of the amniotic-fluid volume in 28-39 weeks-pregnant women presenting oligoamnios by means of intravenous infusion with isotonic solutions. The study group was comprised of 28-39 weeks-pregnant women presenting oligoamnios, to whom volumetric expansion was indicated (n=125) and two control groups: the first comprised of pregnant women without oligoamnios and delivering in the same period (n=125); the second group of pregnant women that presented oligoamnios detected at 40 weeks or more of pregnancy and without the possibility of volumetric expansion (n=125), 375 pregnant women were in the final sample. To the statistical analysis the percentage method and the chi-square test with 95% of certainty were used. An increase was obtained in the amniotic-fluid rate (AFR), 96, 8% of the pregnant women after the third dose of treatment, the main causes to perform the cesarean section were: acute fetal distress, pelvic presentation and failed labor induction associated to a low rate of induction and preterm births with low neonatal morbidity. Concluding that; volumetric expansion is an efficient therapeutic option in the treatment of oligoamnios, extending pregnancy without increasing neonatal morbidity. Key words: plasma volume expander, induced labor, cesarean section, morbidity.
