Con el objetivo de determinar su posible relación con la pérdida dentaria se realizó una investigación descriptiva y transversal de grupo y control, utilizando como muestra 42 ancianos diabéticos (grupo de estudio) y 42 no diabéticos (grupo control), pertenecientes al consultorio médico 272 de la Clínica Estomatológica "Guamá", área de salud "Turcios Lima", Pinar del Río, durante el segundo semestre del año 2008. Se utilizó el método estadístico Chi cuadrado y valor porcentual. La mayoría de los ancianos se encuentran en el grupo de edad de 60 a 69 años, con una higiene bucal mala, tanto de diabéticos 21(50,0%) como no diabéticos 19 (45,2%). Predominó la pérdida dentaria en los diabéticos, existiendo 12 (28,5%) que no poseen ningún diente en el maxilar y 21 (50%) que no poseen ningún diente en la mandíbula. La gingivitis fue la enfermedad periodontal más frecuente encontrada, presente en 17 ancianos (43,5%), con mayor incidencia en los diabéticos 11 (28,2%). El 90, 4% de los diabéticos tenía necesidad de prótesis, en su mayoría prótesis totales 29 (76, 3%). Palabras clave: Ansiedad, higiene bucal, educación, diabetes mellitus, factores de riesgo. ABSTRACT Diabetes Mellitus is a well-recognized risk factor that worsens periodontal disease. Aimed at determining the possible relation between this disease and loss of teeth a descriptive and cross-sectional research was conducted with a test group and a control one using a sample of 42 diabetic-elderly patients (test group) and 42 non-diabetic patients (control group), belonging to No- 272 Doctor's Office at "Guama" Dentist's Clinic, "Turcios Lima" health area, Pinar del Rio during the second term of 2008. The chi-squared test and percentage value were used as statistical methods. The majority of the elderly belonged to the group of ages 60 to 69; presenting a poor dental hygiene in diabetic 21 (50, 0%), and similar to non-diabetic 19 (45, 2%). Loss of teeth prevailed in diabetic being toothless in the maxillary 12 (28, 5%) and 21 (50%) toothless in the jaw. Gingivitis was the most frequent periodontal disease found 17 (43, 5%) showing a higher incidence in diabetic patients 11 (28,2%). The 90,4% of the diabetic patients needed dentures, the majority of them needed total dentures 29 (76, 3%). Key words: Anxiety, oral hygiene,education, diabetes mellitus,risk factors.
