Level of Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior among Specialists of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in West Java Towards Cochlear Implants

SUMMARY

Background: Hearing loss and deafness are still an issue in Indonesia, especially in West Java, with a prevalence of 2.5% and 0.06%, respectively. Cochlear implants are intended for patients with severe sensorineural hearing loss to stimulate the remaining auditory nerves. Based on their competency standards, Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) Specialists are expected to be able to inform patients and families about the cochlear implantation procedures. This study aimed to explore the level of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of ORL-HNS Specialists in West Java towards cochlear implants.Methods: This study was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach. Primary data were collected through a questionnaire filled out by ORL-HNS Specialists who were actively working in West Java in 2021–2022.Results: Data from 157 specialists showed that 41.4% (n=65) had good knowledge about cochlear implants, and 43.9% (n=69) had adequate knowledge, however, 62.4% (n=98) showed a negative attitude. In addition, 99.3% (n=156) showed good behavior.Conclusions: ORL-HNS Specialists in West Java have a sufficient level of knowledge, negative attitude, and good behavior towards cochlear Implants. The negative attitude of the specialists need to be bettered, updating their knowledge about how cochlear implants work and their effectiveness for patients with hearing impairments might give them a new perspective and hopefully change their attitude towards cochlear implants.

Con el objetivo de caracterizar el desarrollo de las especialidades médicas y el comportamiento humano de los coordinadores en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas “General Calixto García” se realizó un estudio minucioso de documentos del Ministerio de Educación Superior, el Ministerio de Salud Pública de Cuba y la aplicación de instrumentos de carácter teórico, los cuales permitieron establecer la importancia de la figura de los coordinadores de las especialidades médicas para la formación de los especialistas en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas “General Calixto García” e identificar a la Educación Avanzada como teoría educativa alternativa para alcanzar en sus coordinadores diferentes grados de comportamiento humano satisfactorio al ser sometidos a sucesivas transformaciones positivas y duraderas.Palabras clave: Posgrado académico; formación de especialistas; comportamiento.ABSTRACT  Currently the Postgraduate Education system represents the fourth level of education that allows through the permanent improvement of university graduates to train them to face with a high degree of independence and creativity the solution of complex problems of the exercise of their profession from of the priorities of the scientifictechnical development and the concrete needs of the socio-economic context of the country. Evaluación de impacto social de los comportamientos profesional y humano de los egresados de la ELAM / Social impact assessment of the professional and human behavior of ELAM graduates Evaluación de impacto social de los comportamientos profesional y humano de los egresados de la ELAM / Social impact assessment of the professional and human behavior of ELAM graduatesObjetivo: profundizar en la evaluación de impacto social de los comportamientos profesional y humano de los egresados de la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina.Desarrollo: la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina orienta sus esfuerzos hacia la búsqueda de la excelencia del proceso docente educativo y la pertinencia social de todos sus resultados, apoyándose en una eficiente gestión en todos los niveles de dirección, en el trabajo colectivo y en el compromiso social de cada uno de los miembros de la comunidad universitaria. Enfatiza en temas tan medulares como el impacto del proyecto científico y pedagógico, infinitamente humano y solidario, y, por ende, en el papel de sus egresados en el contexto donde se desempeñan. Para ello esta investigación se fundamenta en el sistema de categorías, leyes y principios de la teoría de la Educación Avanzada, desde la cual, cuando se desea conocer los efectos de sus diferentes alternativas empleadas, se recurre a la evaluación de impacto que no es más que la evaluación del efecto provocado por la preparación recibida en el entorno. Emphasizing on such key issues as the impact of the scientific and pedagogical project, infinitely human and solidary, and, therefore, the role of its graduates in the context where they perform. For this, this research is based on the system of categories, laws and principles of the theory of Advanced Education, from which, when you want to know the effects of its different alternatives, you use the impact evaluation that is no longer than the evaluation of the effect caused by the preparation received in the environment.
