A methodological approach to the determination of predictive factors for the assessment of the degree of allergic reaction after an insect sting

SUMMARY

Background: A small number of studies have been conducted worldwide describing an association between risk factors and the degree of allergic reaction after an insect sting. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire and sent to all individual patients treated at the University Clinic Golnik (Clinic Golnik) due to an insect sting in the period between 2005 and 2015 (n=2100). A final database (n=416) was prepared according to the exclusion criteria and divided into two smaller ones: a) patients treated for wasp stings (n=237), b) patients treated for bee stings (n=179). Pearson’s chi-squared test was used for the statistical analysis. Results: An estimated prevalence of approximately the same and milder allergic reaction after an insect re-sting was 95.1% in subjects treated for bee stings, while the prevalence of severe allergic reaction was 4.9%. A positive family history in individuals who were treated for bee stings represents a statistically significant risk factor (p=0.05) for a severe allergic reaction after an insect re-sting. The prevalence of severe allergic reactions after an insect re – sting is higher in females, in the age groups 21–40 and = 61 years. The prevalence of milder reactions after bee stings is higher in individuals engaged in beekeeping or living near an apiary. Conclusions: We determined that a positive family history in individuals who experienced bee stings was a statistically significant risk factor for a more severe allergic reaction after re-sting.

A documentary analysis of the syllabus to obtain methodological considerations which allowed making the pertinent transformations in order to fulfill the objectives of the discipline was conducted. Concluding that, the syllabus is not in correspondence with the current development, because it presents limitations regarding teaching-learning processes, centered on the lack of basis and the syndromic approach of the purely obstetric pathologies.Key words: Gynecology, Obstetrics.
