The foundation of the school of historians of St. Volodymyr university: V. F. Tsykh and O. I. Stavrovsky

SUMMARY

The period of work of Volodymyr Frantsovych Tsykh, Professor of the World History Department, the Dean, the Rector of the St. Volodymyr University (1805–1837) and Olexander Ivanovych Stavrovsky, Professor of the World History Department (1811–1882) has been studied in the article. The life paths, pedagogical and scientific activities and scientific heritages of V. F. Tsykh and O. I. Stavrovsky have been analyzed generally on the basis of the study of their historiography for the period of the second third of the XIX century - the beginning of the XXI century. It has been substantiated that a profound knowledge of the subject, an extraordinary memory and a talent of the lecturer allowed Volodymyr Frantsovych Tsykh being considered to be a teacher of a European level. It has been confirmed that Professor Tsykh read his lectures using speaker’s skills, relied on the latest researches, informed his audience about necessary sources. He was one of the first who applied critical method in the study of sources. He gave great importance to the internal history. It has been proven that V.F. Tsykh was an idol of students who characterized him as a modern man and a scholar, and respected him greatly for his teaching skills and for the high level of his World History’s teaching. It has been proven that the scientific heritage of Volodymyr Tsykh and his thoughts on the questions of Antiquity, Middle Ages, Historiography testify the fact that he was a profound and an erudite scholar with an extraordinary approach to the history as a science, that he made his contribution to the general development of the education and science in Ukrainian lands of the Russian Empire in 30-s of the XIX century. It has been verified that Volodymyr Tsykh was an ideal of a man, a teacher and a scientist for his time.  It has been confirmed that Olexander Ivanovych Stavrovsky, Professor of the World History, dedicated thirty years of his life to scientific and pedagogical activities of St. Volodymyr University, had a direct impact on the formation of the School of Historians at the University of St. Volodymyr in the XIX century, stood at the origins of the School of Historians of the institution, initiated its traditions, contributed to the development of education and science in the Ukrainian lands of the Russian Empire in the 30’s - 60’s of the XIX century. It has been testified that V. F. Tsykh and O. I. Stavrovsky influenced the first period of the School of Historians of St. Volodymyr University by their activities at St. Volodymyr University. This period lasted from the opening of the institution in 1834 until the middle of the XIX century. It has been proven that V.F. Tsykh and O. I. Stavrovsky, who generated the traditions of the Ukrainian educational and scientific space, were among the founders of the Ukrainian historical education and science, and that they should take an honorable place among the Ukrainian teachers and scientists of the first half - middle of the XIX century.
