SUMMARY
Im Kontext institutioneller Internationalisierungsprozesse entdeckt der tertiäre Bildungsbereich weltweit seit einigen Jahren den besonderen Beitrag hochschulischer Sprachenpolitik. Dabei wird nicht nur dem spezifischen Profil der einzelnen Einrichtungen Rechnung getragen, auch historische, politische, gesellschaftliche, regionale und individuelle Einflussgrößen fließen ein. Die dominierende Rolle des Englischen als wissenschaftlicher Lingua franca einerseits und die Aufwertung der Nationalsprachen und einer weiter gefassten Mehrsprachigkeit andererseits bilden die Pole eines Spannungsfeldes, in dem Hochschulen nach tragfähigen Lösungen suchen. Dieser Beitrag liefert anhand exemplarischer Länderstudien erste Ansatzpunkte für eine systematische Erfassung globaler hochschulischer Sprachenpolitik.In the context of institutional internationalization processes, the tertiary education sector worldwide has been discovering the special contribution of higher education language policies for some years now. Not only the specific profile of the individual institutions is taken into account. Historical, political, social, regional and individual factors are also highly influential. The dominant role of English as a scientific lingua franca on the one hand and the appreciation of national languages and a broader concept of multilingualism on the other hand form the poles of a field of tension in which universities are looking for viable solutions. This article provides first starting points for a systematic survey of global higher education language policies by means of exemplary country studies.
