Self-Concept of Hearing Impaired and Visually Impaired Children: A Cross Sectional Study

SUMMARY

Background: Studies related to self-concept are mostly related to so called normal people. Specifically, studies carriedout in India are done with sample of college going students. In view of the fact, there is dearth of studies dealing withhearing impaired as well as visually impaired; present study has special significance. It might reveal facts about theperception of hearing impaired and visually impaired people towards themselves. Objective: Study was undertakenthat aimed at measuring self-concepts of visually and hearing-impaired male and female students and examines theextent to which they differ from each other on different types of self-concepts.Sample:Thirty-twoindividuals withhearing impaired and thirty two individuals with visually impaired were included in the present study. Tool:Subjects were administered self evaluation scale of Awasthi (1990) and published by National Institute of Researchand Development, Nagpur (Maharashtra). Design: A 2x2 factorial design was used where both gender andimpairment were varied at two levels. Results: It revealed that the male students had significantly superiorintellectual self concept than female students. No gender difference was found on PSC, SSC, MSC, ESC and ASC.Conclusion: Students with hearing impaired demonstrated significantly better moral and emotional self conceptthan the students with visual impairment.Keywords: Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment, Self-Concept and Self-Esteem
