SUMMARY
Palavras-chave: Animação pernambucana; cinema periférico; identidade; resistência cultural; cultura nordestina.ABOUT A NORTHEASTERN BRAZILIAN IDENTITY AND ITS REPRESENTATION IN ANIMATION CINEMA IN PERNAMBUCOAbstract: The local themes and their elements of cultural identity correspond to some of the main artifices for the structuring of a regional identity in cultural productions executed in peripheral regions. This identity is most often used as a political and aesthetic reaction to a globalized standard imposed by great centers of cultural production. The object of this study, Animation Cinema in the state of Pernambuco in Brazil, due to its doubly peripheral nature, possesses a great number of works that make use of a wide variety of local cultural markers. Thus, based on interviews with the animators, the present research study aims to discuss the narratives and discourses that mediate this production, based on a historical panorama of the works belonging to this filmography with such regional characteristics, and seeking to identify how symbols and representations are embraced or rejected by Pernambucanian filmmakers. Two of the main artistic movements of the state of Pernambuco, Armorial and Mangue, were used as aesthetic and ideological references. Both are based on the same raw material, but they appropriate and use these regional components in very different ways. Thus, we analyze how the tendencies of these two movements influenced animated works of Pernambuco´s cinema, especially contemporary production. The article relies on theoretical works by authors such as Stuart Hall, Michael Featherstone, Ella Shohat and Robert Stam, as well as punctuates the political, social and aesthetic conceptions that are at the origin of what we understand as "Northeastern Culture" in studies by Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Júnior. Keywords: animation from Pernambuco; peripheral cinema; cultural identity; cultural resistance; Northeastern Brazilian culture.
