TRADISI NGEMBLOK DALAM PERKAWINAN DAN IMPLIKASINYA TERHADAP PENGUASAAN HARTA DI KOMUNITAS NELAYAN PANDANGAN WETAN REMBANG

SUMMARY

AbstractA ceremonial order of a common Javanese marriage is generally initiated by a proposal from the fiancé’s family. In the fishermen’s community of Rembang however, a marriage proposal is initiated by the fiancée’s family. The initiative to marriage is accompanied with ngemblok, an existing customary law which is still embraced by the fishing community. In order to maintain the tradition of ngemblok, sanctions will be given to community members violating the customary law. This study aims to determine the various reasons of the fishermen’s community of Pandangan Wetan, Rembang. Apart from that, it aims to find more on the implementation of ngemblok and its implications on marital property control. The result of this research indicates that the reason behind this tradition is prompted by its inheritance value, self-esteem, and assurance to a more secure marriage. The process of Ngemblok begins with an introduction, dating, and assessment of a more serious relationship. Ngemblok procession is conducted as the fiancée side is prepared for a marriage and to prepare delivered goods. The marital property control is generally under the control of the fiancée/wife side as fiancé/husband side is generally not concerned with such matter. In certain case however, the possession of marital property varies depending on family’s situation and condition.
