SUMMARY
A link has been established between the geopolitical position of Sweden and its relations with neighboring countries. It is proved that the geopolitical position of Sweden historically determined the orientation of Sweden to the East, and hence, to the constant conflict with Russia and rivalry in the Baltic Sea region. It is noted that in this regard two important areas of Sweden, namely Gotland and Norrland, are vulnerable to direct actions of Russia. The connectivity between the provocative actions of Russia in Sweden and its plans to expand the area of access / prohibition (A2 / AD) are estimated. The transition from the concept of «defense against invasion» to the enhancement of the expeditionary component, which implies the transfer of strategic national defense objectives to peacekeeping operations, long-term cuts in the defense budget and the reforms created favorable conditions for direct actions by Russia. It is proved that the main reason for Russia’s violation of air and sea space were Sweden’s miscalculations in the field of security and defense policy. It is noted that the conclusions made on the analysis of threats from Russia are not necessarily based on strategic considerations, as we can be exemplified by 2008 Georgian war. It is noted that today the security policy strategy of Sweden is based on the «Hulkvist doctrine» which prioritizes international cooperation, in particular the development of bilateral relations and participation in regional organizations; collective defense is not a priority: it is about the deepened partnership with NATO without joining the alliance. The impact of Russian maneuvers on the Sweden’s paradigm security shift in 2015 was evaluated. It was found that Sweden currently does not have key resources, and therefore depends on foreign military assistance. It is noted that the membership of Sweden in NATO would strengthen security in the North European region but under the condition of the accession of Finland that historically played a role of the buffer against Russia.
