Ancient La Palma and current Humberstone. Heritage complex and cultural landscape of the Chilean pampas.

SUMMARY

Declaratory judgement of Humbertone and Santa Laura saltpeter towns, as world historic heritage in 2005 by UNESCO, emphasizes these saltpeter mine ruins above their similar ones, turning them into cultural platforms to protect the remains of the history of nitrate. Nevertheless, it overshadowed La Palma saltpeter town, which urban and industrial design was transformed in 1934, changing its name into Humberstone, resulting in a new cultural landscape that included Grupo Nebraska saltpeter towns (Cala Cala, Santa Laura, Peña Chica, Keryma and Don Guillermo Camp.). Here the history of La Palma is recovered, which ruin still overlaps Humbertone’s, suggesting a new definition for UNESCO: Heritage Complex La Palma –Humberstone-Santa Laura.
