Escre(vi)ver a diáspora: retratos da emigração em Ferreira de Castro e José Rodrigues Miguéis

SUMMARY

Resumo. Ferreira de Castro (1888?1974) e José Rodrigues Miguéis (1901–1980) viveram intensamente a experiência da emigração (no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos, respectivamente) que transpuseram para a sua obra. Neste artigo, tomando como corpus central o romance Emigrantes de Ferreira de Castro e Gente da Terceira Classe de Rodrigues Miguéis, analisaremos, numa perspectiva comparatista os retratos do “emigrante português”, delineados em confronto com a realidade estrangeira, com o “Outro”, através da instauração de um processo de alteridade. Principiaremos por analisar as descrições da viagens rumo ao “Eldorado”, para depois nos determos na dicotomia entre a unidade e as diferenças culturais encontradas no “novo mundo” e, por fim, atentaremos no modo como as conexões existentes entre a pátria de origem e a de acolhimento, aliadas à possibilidade / impossibilidade de um regresso, poderão contribuir para a construção de novas identidades. Assim, tentaremos compreender em que medida estas imagens, construídas a partir de dicotomias como a chegada / partida, ilusão / desilusão, integração / desintegração, diversidade / unidade poderão reflectir estereótipos enraizados num imaginário cultural ou assumir uma dimensão pessoal e original. Abstract. Ferreira de Castro (1888?1974) and José Rodrigues Miguéis (1901?1980) lived intensely the experience of emigration (the first one in Brazil and the second in the United States), which they transposed into their works. In this article, taking as central corpus the novel Emigrantes by Ferreira de Castro and Gente da Terceira Classe by Rodrigues Miguéis, we analyze, from a com­paratist perspective, the representations of the “Portuguese emigrant” informing their works Emigrantes and Gente da Terceira Classe. First, we will analyze the descriptions of the voyages to the “Eldorado” and the dichotomy between the unit and the cultural differences found in the “new world” and, finally, we will try to understand how the connections between the homeland and the foreign country, together with the possibility / impossibility of a return may contribute to the construction of new identities. Thus, we will attempt to understand how these images, constructed from dichotomies, such as the arrival / departure, illusion / delusion, integration / disintegration, diversity / unity, may reflect some cultural stereotypes rooted in an imaginary dimension or whether they are the result of a mythical, personal vision of the world.
