Investigation on the future expectations and academic motivations of students attending associate degree programsÖnlisans ögrencilerinin gelecek beklentileri ile akademik motivasyonlarinin incelenmesi

SUMMARY

The objective of this research is to evaluate future expectations and academic motivations of the students attending associate degree programs in the context of various variables and to find out whether there is a relationship between future expectations and academic motivations. The sample of this research included 715 students attending a state university’s Social Sciences Vocational School. In the study, the Future Expectations Scale developed by Tuncer and the Academic Motivation Scale adapted to Turkish by Ünal Karagüven were used. The future expectations and academic motivations of the students were examined according to gender, department, class, type of education, perceived academic achievement, mother education level and family income variables and the relationship between future expectations and academic motivations was determined. According to the findings, as family income level and perceived success level increase, future expectations increase as well. Academic motivation level was influenced by gender, perceived success and mother education level. Women's external academic motivation scores were found to be higher and it was determined that academic motivation increases as perceived success level and mother education level increase. Finally, the relationship between academic motivation and future expectation was examined, and positive and moderate correlation was found between the two variables. The level of academic motivation also increases as future expectations increase. In this context, it is important to provide students with hope for the future and to include practices and arrangements that will increase their future expectations.Extended English abstract is in the end of Full Text PDF (TURKISH) file. ÖzetBu arastirmanin amaci önlisans ögrencilerinin gelecek beklentilerini ve akademik motivasyonlarini çesitli degiskenler baglaminda degerlendirmek ve gelecek beklentileri ile akademik motivasyonlari arasinda bir iliski olup olmadigini ortaya koymaktir. Arastirmanin örneklemini bir devlet üniversitesine bagli Sosyal Bilimler Meslek Yüksekokulu’na devam eden 715 önlisans ögrencisi olusturmustur. Arastirmada, Tuncer tarafindan gelistirilen Gelecek Beklentileri Ölçegi ile Ünal Karagüven tarafindan Türkçe’ye adaptasyonu gerçeklestirilen Akademik Motivasyon Ölçegi kullanilmistir. Ögrencilerin gelecek beklentileri ve akademik motivasyonlari cinsiyet, bölüm, sinif, ögretim türü, akademik basari algisi, anne egitim durumu ile aile geliri degiskenlerine göre incelenmis ve gelecek beklentileri ile akademik motivasyonlari arasinda anlamli bir iliski olup olmadigi belirlenmeye çalisilmistir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre, aile gelir düzeyi ve algilanan basari düzeyi arttikça gelecek beklentilerinin de arttigi sonucuna ulasilmistir. Akademik motivasyon düzeyi ise cinsiyet, algilanan basari ve anne egitim düzeyinden etkilenmektedir. Kadinlarin dissal akademik motivasyon puanlarinin daha yüksek oldugu görülmüs, algilanan basari düzeyi ile anne egitim düzeyi yükseldikçe akademik motivasyonun arttigi belirlenmistir. Son olarak gelecek beklentisi ile akademik motivasyon iliskisi incelenmis ve iki degisken arasinda pozitif yönde ve orta düzeyde bir iliski tespit edilmistir. Gelecek beklentisi arttikça akademik motivasyon düzeyi de artmaktadir. Bu baglamda ögrencilerin gelecege umutla bakmalarini saglayacak ve gelecekten beklentilerini artiracak uygulama ve düzenlemelere yer vermek önem tasimaktadir.
