THE INCIDENCE OF PARASITIC DISEASES IN LIVESTOCK IN BALI

SUMMARY

The population of livestock in Bali has continuously increased from year to year. However, some problems are encountered with parasitic infections in livestock. Parasitic infections may be caused by worms, protozoa or ectoparasites. In cattle, the most common infections are those caused by Oesophagostomum sp, Ostertagia sp, Haemonchus sp, Mecistocirrus sp, and Cooperia sp which is the most dominant. Neoascaris vitulorum was reported to be as high as 29.1% in calves. Fascioliasis in cattle was found highly prevalent, between 34.9 to 56.7% and was caused by Fasciola gigantica. Also Paramphistomum infection was reported to be highly prevalent (50.1%). In addition, Boophilus microplus was recorded as high as 36.9%. In goat and sheep, the incidence of Haemonchus contortus was 27.7% and 53.6% respectively. Infestation of Paramphistomum sp in goat was 9.27%. Concerning ectoparasites, Sarcoptes scabiei was reported to be the cause of death of 67% of young goats and up to 11% of older gats in Br. Penginuman, Gilimanuk Negara. Parasitic infections in pigs were caused by Cysticercus tenuicollis (11%) and Ascaris suum (24.2%) and 21.1% showed Metastrongylus apri and also Sarcoptes scabiei was reported to be the cause of skin disease in pigs. In poultry, parasitic infection were caused by Raillietina (96%), Heterakis gallinae (66.7%), Capillaria sp (6.6%), Ascardia galli (56.7%), Oxyspirura mansoni (50%), Acuaria spiralis (13.3%) and Syngamus trachea (3.3%). Multiple infections are common.

ABSTRACT Kaposi´s Sarcoma (KS) is a cancer-like disease. It is most frequent related to HIV infection, present in late stages of the disease and affecting 20 % of HIV infected people having no Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). Since in Pinar del Rio Province a low incidence rate of HIV/AIDS is observed , Kaposi´s Sarcoma is very infrequent. A 50 year-old male who after presenting an epigastralgia suffers from hematoma-like skin lesions, in resolution and when palpated the darker center was nodular. These lesions take practically the whole body, observing loss of weight, no fever, no itching, no oral mucosa lesions. Determining Hb: 112 g/l, Hto; 0.34/L, Leukocytes: 4.4 x 4x109/l, increase of mononuclear cells, associated to lymphopenia, but erythrocyte sedimentation rate, seric cholesterol, transaminases, kidney function and total proteins were normal. Moderated thrombocytopenia and high levels of uric acid were observed. In the bone marrow aspiration atypical lymphocytes and relative depression of the hematopoietic series prevailed. Gastroscopy was negative. Skin biopsy: Compatible with Kaposi´s Sarcoma. HIV: three exams during the study at 3 months intervals being negative from the beginning. The last viral examination carried out at 7 months after the beginning of the study resulted positive when Western Blot technique was used. Key words: Kaposi´s sarcoma, HIV.

Agudizaciones endodónticas al concluir diferentes variantes técnicas de tratamiento pulporadicular / Incidence of endodontic acuteness when concluding the different technical variants in the pulp-radicular treatmentAgudizaciones endodónticas al concluir diferentes variantes técnicas de tratamiento pulporadicular / Incidence of endodontic acuteness when concluding the different technical variants in the pulp-radicular treatmentLas agudizaciones endodónticas constituyen eventos inflamatorios periapicales que se producen durante y después de concluida la terapéutica endodóntica, complicando y tornando más costosos dichos procederes. ABSTRACT Endodontic acuteness constitutes periapical inflammatory events that are produced during and after concluding the endodontic therapeutic, complicating and increasing the cost of the dental procedures. This research was aimed at determining their onset and intensity at "Antonio Briones Montoto" Dentist's Teaching Clinic from September 2007 to July 2008. The sampling was based on opinions and with 80 cases that were divided into 4 groups of 20 cases applying different treatment schedules. Data were collected in tables and graphics and in measures summed up to qualitative variables. A descriptive statistics was used: the two tests, K-proportions and the non-parametric chi-square test to compare the categories as well as the relation and homogeneity of the variables respectively. The total of the cases with acuteness resulted significantly higher with the standardized techniques, no differences in number or the intensity of the acuteness in the treatments in one and two sessions were observed, the best schedule of the treatment was the cervical-apical technique in a session. Key words: endodontics, periapical diseases, diagnosis, radicular duct treatment/methods.
