SUMMARY
The works of Stevan Sremac have played a very important role in drawing the attention of the Serbian and regional public to the linguistic and cultural diversity of Niš and Southeast Serbia. The aim of this Glossary is to make a contribution toward the introduction of these features of south-eastern Serbian dialects into the cultural and linguistic studies outside the Serbian speaking world by interpreting the less familiar lexical items from the chosen corpus, which is comprised precisely of those of Sremac’s works set in Niš: Zona Zamfirova, Ivkova slava, “Cica Jordan” and “Ibiš-aga”. The items (content words, common idioms, phrases and interjections) are analysed in terms of their meanings and uses (in the corpus) as well as their etymology in order to make them more understandable and therefore accessible to a wider audience.
