Educational technology for promoting parental self-efficacy in controlling childhood asthma

SUMMARY

Objective: to verify the self-efficacy of parents and caregivers in controlling childhood asthma before and after an educational intervention and to associate the scores with sociodemographic factors. Methods: quasi-experimental study, with 65 parents and caregivers of children with asthma. The Self-Efficacy and Their Child’s Level of Asthma Control scale – Brazilian version – was used before and 30 days after the intervention with the reading of the booklet “Are you able to control your child’s asthma – let’s learn together?” For the analysis, McNemar’s Chi-square and Wilcoxon statistical tests were used. Results: after 30 days,the effect of the intervention demonstrated statistical significance between high self-efficacy scores and the following variables: marital status (Odds Ratio:2.6;p=0.001), family income (Odds Ratio:3.4;p=0.001) and Bolsa Família Program benefit (Odds Ratio:2.9;p=0.001). Conclusion: the educational booklet was shown to be effective in increasing the self-efficacy of parents and caregivers in the control and management of childhood asthma.

Sistema de acciones para la gestión de recursos educativos abiertos en la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina/System of actions for the management of open educational resources in the Latin American School of Medicine Sistema de acciones para la gestión de recursos educativos abiertos en la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina/System of actions for the management of open educational resources in the Latin American School of MedicineObjetivo: implementar un sistema de acciones para promover la gestión de los recursos educativos abiertos como materiales de apoyo y reutilizables en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje.Método: se realizó un estudio descriptivo desde el mes de junio de 2009 hasta junio de 2014 a una muestra de 51docentes que trabajaban con los REA en la ELAM de una población de 327 profesores.Resultados: se logró disponer de una nueva cultura educativa en la institución que permite a los docentes la aplicación y utilización de contenidos educativos que apoyen el proceso de enseñanza aprendizaje, se establecen mecanismos en la práctica educativa donde se compartan experiencias en el uso de los REA a través de la evidencia científica y sensibilizar a los directivos y docentes acerca de la importancia de la Tecnología Educativa en los procesos Universitarios.Conlcusiones: todo esto contribuirá a que se diseñen recursos educativos que sean herramientas de apoyo al conocimiento abierto en el colectivo de docentes y estudiantes de la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina.ABSTRACTObjetive: to implement a system of actions to promote the management of open educational resources as support materials and reusable in the teaching and learning process.Results: It has been possible to have a new educational culture in the institution that allows teachers to apply and use educational content that supports the teaching-learning process. Mechanisms are established in educational practice where experiences in the use of REA through scientific evidence and sensitize managers and teachers about the importance of Educational Technology in the University processes.Conclusions: All this will contribute to the design of educational resources that are tools to support open knowledge in the group of teachers and students of the Latin American School of Medicine.
