Atlas Linguístico do Brasil: gênese, evolução e estágio atual / Linguistic Atlas of Brazil: Genesis, Evolution and Current Stage

SUMMARY

Palavras-chave: Atlas Linguístico do Brasil; gênese; percurso; estágio atual. This paper aims to expose a historical synthesis of the 25 years of activities of the Linguistic Atlas of Brazil Project since its genesis, which took place during the Seminar Paths and Perspectives for Geolinguistics in Brazil, held in November 1996, at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) to the current days. Once the Salvador Charter was signed by the dialectologists and sociolinguists present at that event, the National Committee was formed under the leadership of the late Suzana Cardoso, who started to manage the Project’s destinations at the national level. In the following years, the ALiB defined the objectives, established the methodological proceedings, prioritizing field research carried out in 250 cities: 25 of them represented by the capitals and 225 by points in the interior of the states. Although it emphasizes diatopy, the ALiB, following the trend of modern Geolinguistics, is included in the category of multidimensional atlas by including some methodological procedures of sociolinguistics, with regard to the profile of the informants, such as gender, age and education (RADTKE; THUN, 1991). After publishing the first volumes with data collected in the capitals (CARDOSO et al., 2014a, 2014b), the team finalized volume 3 for editing and prepares the next volumes covering data from the capitals and the country’s interior. During this quarter of a century, ALiB has fulfilled its objectives, such as describing the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil, disseminating its results in national and international events and vehicles, in addition to encouraging the training of researchers at various academic levels. Keywords: Linguistic Atlas of Brazil; genesis; evolution; current stage.
