Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' mathematical reasoning abilities through an open ended approach. This type of research is classroom action research (CAR), which consists of two cycles, namely cycle I and cycle II. The subjects of this research were class VIII-A of SMP Negeri 2 Muara Sipongi, which consisted of 26 students. The objects observed in this study are all processes and results of learning mathematics to improve students' mathematical reasoning abilities through the application of an open ended approach. The learning tools used in this study were lesson plans (RPP), teacher manuals (BPG), student worksheets (LKS), test instruments, observation sheets on the teacher's ability to manage learning and student activity observation sheets. The test instrument used in this study is in the form of an essay which has been calculated by calculating the validity, reliability, and level of difficulty as well as discriminating power. The results showed that students' mathematical reasoning abilities with the application of the Open Ended approach in cycle I obtained 53.84% or 14 of the 26 students included in the "complete" category. In cycle II the percentage of completeness of the results of the mathematical reasoning ability test for class VIII-A students of SMP Negeri 2 Muara Sipongi was 96.15 or 25 of the 26 students were included in the "complete" category. Based on the results of observer observations, the process of implementing learning through an open ended approach for class VIII A students of SMP Negeri 2 Muara Sipongi, from the first meeting to the last meeting, went well.
