Resumo

Nestório foi bispo de Constantinopla de 428 a 431 d.C. Durante seu breve episcopado à frente da sé da capital do Império Romano do Oriente, protagonizou a emergência de um conflito teológico que se tornaria central nas discussões cristológicas dentro da hierarquia eclesiástica na Antiguidade Tardia. Nestório defendia uma conjunção (συνάφεια) entre as naturezas humana e divina no Cristo, enquanto seu principal oponente, o bispo Cirilo de Alexandria, advogava uma união (ἕνωσις) entre elas. Por suas ideias, Nestório foi declarado herético pelo Concílio de Éfeso I (431), mas sua noção de divindade seria retomada e atualizada vinte anos depois, no Concílio de Calcedônia (451), sem, contudo, obter uma revisão da sua condenação. Em sua defesa, Nestório escreveu uma apologia a sua doutrina e posição pessoal: o Liber Heraclidis. Sem se restringir aos aspectos teológicos da doutrina de Nestório, o objetivo desse artigo é propor uma forma de abordagem para esse documento que nos possibilite inseri-lo dentro de uma problemática mais ampla, de natureza político-religiosa, relacionada a uma forma de se pensar a natureza do poder imperial.
