Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos / Evaluation and Training of the Nursing Personnel: Pediatric Intensive Care UnitIntroducción: La disposición y preparación del personal de enfermería es uno de los aspectos fundamentales en las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos. Objetivo: Evaluar el grado de competencia y desempeño de enfermeros en la Terapia Pediátrica en relación a técnicas de Abordajes Vasculares y no Vasculares. Métodos: Investigación aplicada, descriptiva, prospectiva y longitudinal durante el 2008 en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos, Hospital Provincial Docente "Pepe Portilla", Pinar del Río, Cuba. Se utilizaron métodos de encuesta y observación de forma comparativa en dos momentos, separados de un curso de capacitación. El universo y la muestra coincidieron en un total de 35 enfermeros. Resultados: Se logró una elevación del nivel de conocimiento de los enfermeros en relación a los abordajes vasculares y no vasculares posterior a un curso de capacitación elaborado a partir de necesidades de aprendizaje detectadas. Conclusiones: Es imprescindible la constante preparación y superación del personal de enfermería que trabaja en los servicios de atención al grave sobre todo en las Unidades Pediátricas. ABSTRACT Introduction: The disposition and preparation of the nursing personnel is one of the main aspects in the Pediatric Intensive Care Units.Objective: To evaluate the degree of competence and performance of the nurses in Pediatric Intensive Care Units in relation to vascular and non- vascular approach techniques. Methods:An applied, descriptive, prospective and longitudinal research carried out during 2008 in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at "Pepe Portilla" Provincial Teaching Hospital, Pinar del Rio. Cuba. Survey and observation were the methods used compared in two moments and separate from a training course. The universe and the sample coincided in a total of 35 nurses. Results: An increase was obtained in the level of knowledge of the nurses in relation to vascular and non-vascular approaches after the training course considering the learning needs. Conclusions: It is necessary the continuing preparation and training of the nursing staff in the intensive care services in all Pediatric Units.Key words: training, professional competence.
