SUMMARY
In Puga (1997), we showed an existing connection between mitigation and power or status of speakers in conversation. The results revealed that speakers with less power or status rely more on mitigation than those enjoying greater power. In that occasion, a conversation between a 58 years old architect and a 27 years old professor of French in Chilean Spanish, was studied. We considered gender, age, and prestige associated to the profession as variables. Two additional conversations between men and women professionals (two from Santiago de Chile and one from Mexico City) have been included in the corpus in order to expand the focus of this analysis and find out whether there can be similarly asymmetrical phenomena found in female and male speech acts.
