SUMMARY
Public school, undergraduate and graduate online courses aspire to provide authentic learning experiences, which connect students with the content, peers and instructor of record. In the online environment the interaction between students and the instructor requires intentional connections be formed. These connections are very different from face-to-face classes. Problem-based learning (PBL) in an online environment may offer one solution to the dilemma. The following article examines the use of PBL in an online graduate course. Over the past four years, the graduate class applied this approach to learning. The course was evaluated each semester and improvements made to the class. Practical suggestions offered to educators as a way to actively engage students of all ages in the digital learning environment.
