Pitch and tone in English and Slovene

SUMMARY

O'Connor and Arnold's model of British English intonation (O'Connor, Arnold, 1973), which was the basis of my comparison of English and Slovene sentence intona­ tion*) consists of the following types of pitch and tone:1. low and high (emphatic) prehead,2. high, low, rising, and falling head (unemphatic); and stepping, sliding, and climbing head (emphatic),3. seven nuclear tones, i.e. low fall, high fall, rise-fall, low rise, high rise, fall-rise, and mid-level.
