SUMMARY
The article reveals and compares the receptions of stoicism in the world literature of the late 19th - first half of the 20th century. It enables to trace the transformation of its narrative images. The analisys is based on the works of A.P. Chekhov, L. N. Tolstoy, M. Gorky, H. Sienkiewicz, F. Pessoa, E. M. Remark, E. Hemingway, T. Wilder, B. Brecht, W. Percy and critical research. The study starts from assumptions of discerning of the concepts of «the teaching of Stoic» (school doctrine) and «stoicism» (reflection on Stoic's doctrine). It takes into account the special, almost anonymous way of being of Stoicism in Western culture and the existence of images and clichés, which are customary to associate with the Stoics, but which are not related to them. The study considers a broad historical context and makes it possible to better understand the significance of the Stoic heritage for the culture and philosophy of the 20th century Western world.
